Summary Douglas Adams

What we enjoyed about “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”:

  • Creative, really funny take on science fiction
  • Earth is “mostly harmless” ๐Ÿ˜€
  • Author predicted some things
  • Bit abstract or meta at times
  • “Not your typical science fiction story”
  • Best part is the humour
  • Funny without being mean
  • Arthur Dent a wonderful protagonist
  • Bulldozer!
  • Philosophical dimension wonderful
  • What’s the meaning of life, the universe and everything? 42! Nice! What is the question? Not gonna tell ya, lol!
  • Nonsensical but sense
  • Whacky science is consistent
  • Bablefish really cool
  • Hitchhiker’s Guide hilarious
  • Everything seemed so random but then it made sense after all, e.g. randomly taking the mice with them, mice super important later
  • Decentralising humans and earth
  • Tone, well written, comedic
  • Encyclopedia
  • Monthy Python-esque
  • Everything had a certain vibe
  • Wild ride
  • Underlying awkwardness, relatable
  • Touching, deeper moments, make one think
  • Slartibartfast and his fjords were super touching
  • Petunia pot: Not again! ๐Ÿ˜€
  • Existential dread very relatable
  • Zaphod looks like Donald Trump for one of us
  • Improbability Drive brilliant! Makes fun of hard scifi and super serious technologies –> “weird math in the best way” –> “favourite part of the book”, “amazing”
  • Write the characters into so many insane problems –> saves them again and again; “very improbable”, very deus ex machina
  • Narrative voice great
  • Marvin relatable โค
  • Normal people

What we discussed:

  • Part of the story is confusing (especially when listening to the audiobook)
  • Slartibartfast: story within a story, confusing but cool
  • Pay attention or you’re lost!
  • Fun things that did not come up again, e.g. Zaphod Beeblebrox
  • Ending rushed, feels unfinished
  • Too much setup for later sequels
  • Whale dying super sad
  • Trillian the only named female character, quite sad
  • Male-centered, classic scifi
  • Pratchett much better representation-wise
  • Arthur Dent exhibits amazing resilience, therapy??? Unrealistically cool
  • We felt so sorry for Marvin ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
  • Marvin deserved better!

Rating of the book:

  • 5/5 Babelfishes, “just amazing”, “42”
  • 4/5 Paranoid Androids
  • 4/5 Norwegian Fjords; read it again
  • 5/5 Vogon Poems, “nostalgia” factor ๐Ÿ™‚
  • 4.25/5 Stars :), “it was so funny and so clever, I loved it”

Other books we talked about:

  • Hitchhiker Sequels mostly recommendable, they get more random
  • “Dirk Gentley” series amazing; books not so much
  • Absurd British humour if you’re in the mood: Monthy Python
  • “Conversations with Friends” by Sally Rooney is “brilliant”, “I could know this person, it’s very realistic”
  • “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is really good, “I’m quite addicted to it”
  • “The Wee Free Men” by Terry Pratchett; “Mort” if you want to start with Death, “Guards Guards!” if you want to start with the Guard; otherwise there’s also the Witches and the Wizards
  • “The Shadow Of What Was Lost” by James Islington
  • Full cast audiobook by Gaiman’s “American Gods” is brilliant; easy to follow
